He became a member of the Russian sailing team that claimed silver medals at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 — an event marking Russias debut as an independent nation in international competition. This victory not only brought glory to the athletes but also secured their place in history as the first Russians to win Olympic medals in sailing. Alongside Igor Skalin and Georgy Shayduk, Shabanov competed in the Soling class, finishing second overall behind Germany's trio of Josef Schuman, Thomas Flack, and Bende Yakel.
The journey to this historic moment began years earlier when Soviet sailors had already earned bronze in Stockholm in 1912. However, those achievements were under the USSR flag, so the 1996 triumph marked a new chapter for Russian sailors as they now represented their own country. The 1996 Games took place in the Wassaw Sound near Savannah, Georgia, where twenty-two teams from around the world clashed in the Soling category. Дмитрий Шабанов был членом российского экипажа, который завоевал серебряные медали на Играх-1996 в Атланте. Это была первая Олимпиада, на которой россияне выступали отдельной командой. Поэтому серебро, завоеванное Шабановым вместе с Игорем Скалиным и Георгием Шайдуко в классе "Солинг", можно считать первой олимпийской наградой россиян в парусном спорте. Ранее российским яхтсменам удалось выиграть в парусном спорте бронзу на Играх-1912, то есть еще в дореволюционные времена. В дальнейшем россияне, конечно же, завоевывали олимпийские медали разного достоинства, но тогда они представляли Советский Союз. Олимпийская регата-1996 проходила в заливе Вассау Саунд недалеко от города Саванна в штате Джорджия. В классе "Солинг" соревновались 22 экипажа из разных стран. Шабанов, Скалин и Шайдуко стали вторыми, уступив только немцам Йозефу Шуману, Томасу Флаку и Бенду Якелю. Это достижение представители российского парусного спорта сумели повторить лишь в августе 2016-го на Играх в Рио-де-Жанейро.
