
Sergey Kotenko is a former water polo player and coach from Kazakhstan who has made significant contributions to the sport at both national and international levels. Born on December 2, 1956, in Almaty, Kazakh SSR, he began his career with FC Dynamo Almaty in 1973 before moving abroad for several years. During this time, he played professionally in Italy's Serie A club, Fiorentina, where he gained valuable experience.
Kotenko's athletic journey was marked by numerous accolades throughout his playing days. He won Olympic gold medals during the Moscow Games of 1980 as part of the Soviet team. In addition to that title, he claimed three European championships between 1983 and 1987 while also becoming twice World Cup winner in 1981 and 1983. On an individual level, Ketenko achieved remarkable success, including earning bronze at the 1988 Olympics and finishing third at two editions of the World Championship held in 1986. His domestic achievements were equally impressive winning the USSR championship twice in 1981 and 1982, claiming silverware at multiple events such as the Spartakidays and the Asian Games.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kotenko represented Kazakhstan internationally alongside other athletes from the newly formed country. With the national squad, he secured victory at the Asia Cup in 1995. After retiring from competitive play, Kotenko transitioned into coaching roles within local clubs like FC Dynamo Almaty and later took charge of the Kazakhstani national team. Eventually shifting focus towards business ventures, he left behind sports but remained deeply connected through mentoring young talents via training sessions and educational programs aimed at developing future champions.
