If residents of settlements in the West Bank had bought their land from local residents, rather than confiscating it for nothing, there would probably not have been an acute conflict between settlers and peasants. The settlers who received free land from the Israeli state did not always understand that the land was taken away from the peasants; and when they understood, they created their own ideology, according to which the Palestinian land is ownerless. If they had to pay for the land, they could buy what the peasants were willing to sell, and they would value what they bought more.
