Why can't we simply borrow wha...

Why can't we simply borrow what is useful to us from Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, especially Zen, as we borrow from Christianity, science, American Indian traditions and world literature in general, including philosophy, and let the rest go hang? Borrow what we need but rely principally upon our own senses, common sense and daily living experience.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Mayonnaise, like hollandaise, ...

Mayonnaise, like hollandaise, was invented by the French to cover up the flavor of spoiled flesh, stale vegetables, rotten fish. Beware the sauce! Where food comes beslobbered with an elegant slime you may well suspect the integrity of the basic ingredients.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

We need wilderness because we ...

We need wilderness because we are wild animals. Everyone needs a place where he can go to go crazy in peace. For the terror, freedom, and delirium. Because we need brutality and raw adventure, because men and women first learned to love in, under, and all around trees, because we need for every pair of feet and legs about ten leagues of naked nature, crags to leap from, mountains to measure by, deserts to finally die in when the heart fails.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Wilderness. The word itself is...

Wilderness. The word itself is music.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

It's all still there in heart ...

It's all still there in heart and soul. The walk, the hills, the sky, the solitary pain and pleasure-they will grow larger, sweeter, lovelier in the days and years to come.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

We are kindred all of us, kill...

We are kindred all of us, killer and victim, predator and prey, me and the sly coyote, the soaring buzzard, the elegant gopher snake, and trembling cottontail, the foul worms that feed on our entrails; all of them, all of us. Long live diversity, long live the earth!

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Paradise is the here and now, ...

Paradise is the here and now, the actual, tangible, dogmatically real Earth on which we stand. Yes, God bless America, the Earth upon which we stand.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Be as I am - a reluctant enthu...

Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic....So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space...

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Simplicity is always a virtue....

Simplicity is always a virtue.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

The fire. The odor of burning ...

The fire. The odor of burning juniper is the sweetest fragrance on the face of the earth, in my honest judgment; I doubt if all the smoking censers of Dante's paradise could equal it. One breath of juniper smoke, like the perfume of sagebrush after rain, evokes in magical catalysis, like certain music, the space and light and clarity and piercing strangeness of the American West. Long may it burn.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

But of the seven deadly sins, ...

But of the seven deadly sins, wrath is the healthiest - next only to lust.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Anarchism? You bet your sweet ...

Anarchism? You bet your sweet betsy. The only cure for the ills of democracy is more democracy. Much more.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

A crowded society is a restrictive society; an overcrowded society becomes an authoritarian, repressive and murderous society.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Instant communication is not c...

Instant communication is not communication at all but merely a frantic, trivial, nerve-wracking bombardment of cliches, threats, fads, fashions, gibberish and advertising.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

I now find the most marvelous ...

I now find the most marvelous things in the everyday, the ordinary, the common, the simple and tangible.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

The love of a man for his wife...

The love of a man for his wife, his child, of the land where he lives and works, is for me the real meaning of mystical experience.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Yes, there are plenty of heroe...

Yes, there are plenty of heroes and heroines everywhere you look. They are not famous people. They are generally obscure and modest people doing useful work, keeping their families together and taking an active part in the health of their communities, opposing what is evil (in one way or another) and defending what is good. Heroes do not want power over others.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

Saving the world is only a hob...

Saving the world is only a hobby. Most of the time I do nothing.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

I took the other road, all rig...

I took the other road, all right, but only because it was the easy road for me, the way I wanted to go. If I've encountered some unnecessary resistance that's because most of the traffic is going the other way.

Edward Paul Abbey 702 quotes

The one thing ... that is trul...

The one thing ... that is truly ugly is the climate of hate and intimidation, created by a noisy few, which makes the decent majority reluctant to air in public their views on anything controversial. ... Where all pretend to be thinking alike, it's likely that no one is thinking at all.
