Mass "S.Nasar and D.Gruber|s article on the Poincare conjecture does provide an antidote to the bland image of scientists by depicting the commutity|s less than happy recluses - like Grigory Perelman - and its ambitious empire builders, as S.T. Yau. However, siting by himself while listening to opera in the upper balcony of the Mariinsky Theatre is not what distinguishes Perelman from other socially inept members of our species any more than pushing his own agenda too hard before the Chinise press in Beijing distinguishes Yau from other overly zealous individuals. What does distiguish Perelman, Yau, and their ilk is that they have accoplished something that wiil endure and will leave legacy that,once we have had time to assimilate it, will give our descendants something to contemplate besides their own nawels. Of course the rest of us are jealous of their immortality, but our jealousy does not excuse our succumbing to the crab-bucket syndrome. 2. I would, however, like to say a few words in defense of Yau. As Shiing-Chen Chern|s successor of Chinese mathematics, Yau has outsized ego and great ambition, and has done things that dismay his peer. What shouldn|t be forgotten is the enormous contributions Yau has made to the mathematical community. Beyound what Nasar and Gruber describe in their article, he is one of the greatest teachers, having trained - according to the Mathematics Genealogy Project - thirty-nine student and twenty-five descendants in all, including many of the top geometers working today. And he has always been generous in his support of people at less well-known institutions whose work impress him(my collegues Erwin Lutwak and Gaoyong Zhang are two exaples). Yau|s impact on mathematics and mathematical community is difficult to overstate, and it is virtually all positive.
