Sofia Bekatorou, a name that echoes through the annals of sailing history, was born on December 26th, 1977, in Athens, Greece. From an early age, she showed a natural affinity for the sea, beginning her journey with windsurfing at just eight years old. By the time she turned fourteen, Sofia had already claimed titles as both Greek and Balkan champion in the Optimist class. Her passion for the sport took her far beyond her homeland, but it was during the Sydney 2000 Olympics that she first partnered with Emilia Tsoulfa, only to finish in a disappointing 14th place.
Yet, Sofia's determination never wavered. As the Olympic Games approached again, she and her partner dominated international competitions, securing three World Championships and two European Championships in the 470 class. This momentum carried them straight into the spotlight at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where they emerged victorious—gold medals around their necks, celebrating not just personal triumphs, but also national pride.
The road wasn't always smooth. At the next Olympics in Beijing, Sofia opted to switch classes, competing in the Flying Dutchman category alongside Sofia Papadopulu and Vangelis Krawarioti. На Играх-2012 Бекатору не стартовала, а в Рио-де-Жанейро была знаменосцем сборной Греции на церемонии открытия, но на самой олимпийской регате в призовую тройку не попала.
